Despite their unpredictability, British summers bring warmer temperatures, and many look forward to the season all year round. However, the warmth and associated humidity cause problems for some, particularly those who find sleeping in hot weather difficult.
Here, TEMPUR® offers their advice on attaining a deep and peaceful sleep in summer, including how to make your room cooler and how to adapt your sleep environment.
Staying hydrated is vital to your health but can be more difficult in the summer, due to the higher temperatures. If you aren’t sufficiently hydrated, the quality of your sleep could be impacted, and you may even be woken by your need for water. It’s recommended you drink around two litres of water a day to stay healthy, so ensure you drink plenty throughout the day.
While an alcoholic beverage can be a relaxing treat, drinking it can severely dehydrate you and should be avoided if you’re experiencing difficulty sleeping.
Air circulation is key to staying cool in the summer nights and opening a bedroom window is the simplest way to do this.
However, you should not have your windows open all day; this can allow warm external air and bright midday sun to increase the temperature inside further. At the warmest points of the day, keep your windows and curtains closed to minimise the amount of hot air and light that enter your bedroom. Open your bedroom windows once the sun is setting and allow the cooler evening air to ventilate your bedroom.
It’s no surprise that an electric fan is useful in helping you sleep. The fan works to circulate air and create breeze indoors, cooling the room. Some even find the humming noise soothing to drift off to sleep to!
An extra tip to consider is putting a bowl of ice in front of your electric fan, to chill air as it passes over it. This stops the fan just moving warm air, cooling you faster. A few hours before sleep, make room in the freezer for a container of water. When this is frozen, put it in front of your fan and enjoy the benefits as you sleep.
The right bedding is crucial to sleeping well in summer, with those made of light and breathable materials being the most suitable for warm weather.
Cotton is often considered the best bedding material for summer nights, as it is affordable, soft and can absorb and transmit heat, due to natural ventilation. TEMPUR® offers a range of luxury bed linen, crafted from high quality cotton and designed to help regulate your temperature throughout the night.
Many people are aware that changing your duvet, from a heavier option in winter to a lower tog summer choice, is important to ensure you don’t get too hot as you sleep.
However, if you own a TEMPUR® quilt, there’s no need! TEMPUR-FIT® Quilts are designed with TEMPRAKON® technology to regulate body temperature and humidity through all seasons. The innovative design means they keep you warm in winter and cool in summer, so that changing your duvet between seasons is no longer required.
A cooling mist of water can be just what you need to lower your temperature on a hot night. Fill a spray bottle with chilled water and keep it by your bed. You can use this to spritz yourself in hot moments throughout the night and cool off. The neck and wrists are particularly good areas to spray, given their high blood flow.
You can also use this spray bottle to mist your curtains with water. This will help to cool air as it flows in from the outside.

Many of us will have used a hot water bottle to stay warm in the winter, without having considered using one in the summer. On a warm night, try filling a water bottle with cold water and even some ice, then placing it in your bed a little while before you go to sleep – be sure to screw the lid on tight though, so that your mattress doesn’t get wet! This will lower the temperature and absorb heat throughout the night.
So, say goodbye to those unbearably hot and sweaty nights with these tips to keep you cool and get the best night’s sleep.
