Knowing how to clean a pillow can be difficult. With so many materials and types, finding the correct method and frequency for cleaning can be confusing and lead to pillows not being properly cared for. It’s important that you learn the correct way to care for your pillow, so that it can continue providing maximum support to your head and neck for as long as possible while you sleep.

In this post, TEMPUR® provides advice on cleaning different types of pillows and how to dry pillows, so that you get the most out of yours.

Cleaning a TEMPUR® Pillow

Each TEMPUR® pillow is crafted using TEMPUR® Material. Unique in its design, the material was engineered originally for astronauts and uses a viscoelastic open cell structure, which enables it to absorb and distribute pressure evenly. This provides you with unrivalled support as you sleep.

The exceptionality of TEMPUR® Material means that TEMPUR® pillows can’t be cleaned like other pillows. You should not wash, sponge or dry clean a TEMPUR® pillow; soaking the TEMPUR® Material with water or cleaning fluid is likely to damage the structure that allows it to provide such incredible support and comfort.

Each TEMPUR® pillow comes labelled with specific care instructions that you should follow. If your pillow needs a freshen up, most are equipped with a cover that can be removed to allow airing or washing.

Memory Foam or Latex Pillow Cleaning

As with TEMPUR® pillows, memory foam and latex pillows can’t be washed in a machine. You should follow the specific care instructions provided with your product.

If the pillow is dirty, vacuuming gently or tumbling on a no-heat setting in a dryer can remove unwanted dust. You may also be able to spot clean small areas of using soap and water but must be careful not to damage the foam.

Washing Down or Feather Pillows

Although you should always read and follow the care instructions, most down and feather pillows can be safely cleaned in a washing machine. You should only use a small amount of mild detergent and always select a cool cycle. If possible, wash two pillows together to ensure the washing machine is balanced.

Washing Polyester or Fibrefill Pillows

Polyester and fibrefill pillows can also be washed, using warm water and a gentle cycle. As these pillows tend to be small and compress easily, you should try to wash three or more together. This is to balance the machine and ensure even washing.

As with memory foam and latex pillows, a mild detergent should be used and only in small quantities.

How to Dry a Pillow

If your pillow is one of the types that requires washing, then you will also need to know how to dry it properly. If your pillows aren’t thoroughly dried, you risk mildew growing in the damp environment.

The best way to dry your pillows is to hang them on a washing line in mild or sunny weather. However, this is not always possible, due to weather or time limitations. If you need your pillow drying more quickly, many can be dried in a dryer on a low to medium heat. Remember to always add dryer balls; this prevents clumps forming in the pillows, which make them uncomfortable to sleep on.

How to Know When to Replace a Pillow

As with a mattress, the lifespan of your pillows should be years, if properly cared for, but they will need replacing eventually.

The key indicators to look out for are changes to the shape of your pillow, particularly if they make it uncomfortable or less supportive, and odours that linger even after washing. If either of these changes occur to your pillow, it’s time to consider replacing it.

When this happens, you should take the opportunity to upgrade your pillow to a higher quality option, such as a TEMPUR® pillow.
