GQ: "Is TEMPUR's new mattress worth the near £3k price tag?"

We sent a TEMPUR PRO® SmartCool™ mattress to the testers at GQ to see what they thought. Below is what they had to say after trying it for themselves.

“Tempur mattresses have always seemed like a myth to me. When I was a kid, adults talked about them like they were the ticket to perfect sleep. As I got older, though, and experienced first a uni halls bed (shudder) and then a series of London rental flats, I realised exactly why all of the grown-ups in my life had harped on about them so much.

I am now a fully-fledged adult with uni halls ten plus years behind me, and the same new-found obsession with sleep and longevity as most other millennials. Sure, you can pop a plant-based tablet that promises an undisturbed 40 winks to help improve your sleep, or you can rub lavender and ylang ylang oil into your pressure points, but now, having finally been lucky enough to get my hands on my own Tempur mattress, I don't think there's anything quite like it to help improve your sleep score. Three months in, let's dive into how the Tempur Pro Luxe SmartCool mattress changed things for me.

Let’s talk tech

I tested a double, which comes in at a hefty £2,899. Crafted using next generation (yep, this is even a step-up from the OG mattress I heard about when I was a kid) Tempur Advanced Material, the SmartCool mattress apparently offers the brand's best ever pressure relief, making it more than worth the price. It distributes body weight more evenly and effectively, supporting the entire body and leading to a feeling of near weightlessness. As someone who spends a lot of time running and in the gym, I was particularly interested in if this could help with recovery and pressure relief. Spoiler alert: I've never felt better.

What’s more, the mattress has been made using something called SmartCool Technology, which is somehow woven into the zip-off QuickRefresh washable cover to absorb excess heat, keeping you feeling fresh. And for this I can vouch, as I first started using the mattress in peak summer. Did I break a sweat? Not once.

Taking you to new heights

This mattress feels expensive and grown-up. It has a 30cm depth, which is the deepest a Tempur mattress has ever gone, giving you a sort of hotel vibe as you scramble to climb into it. Packed into that 30cm is a whole lot of stuff. The new Tempur Advanced Material is what provides the pressure relief across your body, with billions of ultra-sensitive cells adapting to your weight. There’s a 10cm layer made up of Tempur’s Adapt Material, which enables the pressure-relieving, body-conforming and motion-absorbing technology that Tempur mattresses are known for.

Do note that, because of its size, it takes a man (or two) and a van to get it into your home.”

“Does it last?

Three months in, and the springless mattress is nicely plumping back into shape each morning once I peel myself away from its cushioning clutches. My sleep? As good as the very first time I laid my weary head down on it and as desirable as all those adults of my youth made out. Did I ever think I’d have a mattress that had a removable cover I could wash? No. Has it changed the game entirely? Yes. Money well spent? Absolutely. At time of writing, my only problem is getting out of it when my alarm bells ring at 6am.”
