How to choose the right double bed base or frame
When choosing the right double bed frame for you, it’s important you consider your personal preferences and sleep needs. Everyone is different, so you may want to think about:
- Your space. You’ll need to choose a double bed frame that fits perfectly in your space. Measure carefully, and decide whether you need a standard, small or long double. You’ll also need to make sure it fits your mattress – or vice versa.
- Your storage needs. Our double bed bases are available as divans – with 4 drawers of side storage – and ottomans – with underbed storage. Ideal for storing extra bedding, towels and seasonal clothing.
- Your lifestyle. Besides our regular double frames, you can also choose an adjustable bed frame. These are available in single and double handsets – the latter is perfect if you and your partner prefer different sleeping positions.
What's the difference between a double bed base and a bed frame?
A bed base is the foundation of a bed - for example, the platform or box spring. Meanwhile, a bed frame is the overall outer structure, which holds the mattress in place. Frames also often include headboards, though you may need to order this separately, depending on your choice.
What type of double beds are available?
At TEMPUR® there are a range of double bed bases and frames to choose from, so you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your room. Different style options include:
- Standard divan frames. Double divans are available without drawers, or with 4 optional drawers for extra storage space.
- Slim divan frames. Similar to a standard divan, but has a streamlined frame and stylish stiletto legs.
- Ottoman bed bases. These beds offer large underbed storage, accessed using a gas mechanism that helps lift the mattress and frame with ease.

What are the measurements of a double bed?
Standard double bed frames measure 135 x 190 cm. Small double beds (also known as a 4ft bed) are 120 x 190 cm, which can be perfect for single sleepers who want more stretch space. A small double can also help conserve more room.
Meanwhile, a long double bed base is 135 x 200 cm – 10 cm longer than a standard double. Double bed bases are great for people of average height but, if you’re more than 190 cm tall; more space is likely to equal better sleep.
Remember, if you opt for a small or long double bed frame, you’ll need the right size mattress to go with it.

What size mattress fits on a standard double bed?
A standard double bed base is 135 x 190 cm – so you will need a standard double mattress that measures 135 x 190 cm to fit it. Similarly, if you choose a small double bed (120 x 190 cm), or a long double (135 x 200 cm) – you’ll need the same size mattress to match.
Can two adults sleep in a double bed?
Yes, a standard or long double is the perfect size for two people – or single sleepers who want a bit more wriggle room. Small doubles may also work well, but they are 15cm smaller in width than a standard/long double.
If you and your partner want space to stretch out, the next size up is a king size bed. This measures 150 x 200 cm – 15cm wider and 10 cm longer than a standard double.
What size pillow is best for a double bed?
Two standard-size pillows will fit nicely on a double bed. But this can also depend on your personal preferences – some people prefer bigger or smaller pillows. Any larger than a double, we recommend you size up your pillows.
