The History of Black Friday

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday falls on the last Friday of November, which in 2024 is Friday 29th November. Synonymous with unmissable deals, this event can run for up to a week leading up to the main day. Even better for shopaholics, sales can sometimes extend over the weekend into ‘Cyber Monday’.

What is Black Friday?

The origins of Black Friday are rooted in the United States, taking place the day after Thanksgiving, The first recorded reference to ‘Black Friday’ goes back to 1951. It appeared in an industrial journal highlighting the practice of workers calling in sick the day after the national holiday so they could enjoy a rare 4-day weekend.

About the same time, this paved the way for a new shopping trend as crowds would make use of the extended weekend to get a head start on their Christmas purchases.

The surge in sales at the time would also cause a financial boom for the retail business. This financial pivot point would turn their balance sheets from a loss – in red, to a profit – in black. Hence another possible reason for the name ‘Black Friday’.

Why is it called Cyber Monday?

First used in 2005, Cyber Monday is the name for the first day of the week after the shopping phenomenon of that is Black Friday weekend. Even though people are returning to work, they still want to shop, but rather than go in store, they go online for Cyber Monday deals. With the internet so accessible on so many different devices, Cyber Monday has become one of the biggest ecommerce shopping days of the year.

If not before, see you on the last Friday in November…
