Sleep and Customer Satisfaction
Still got a teddy bear sleeping next to you at night? It’s OK, you’re not alone. As many as one third of Brits share their bed with a plush pal. But can soft toys help improve our sleep quality more than we know?
TEMPUR® investigate the phenomenon of adults sleeping with soft toys and explore its possible benefits, from decreased anxiety to a better night’s rest overall.
HOW DO SOFT TOYS HELP CHILDREN SLEEP?
Even before they are toddlers, children can begin forming sentimental attachments to everyday items that make them feel safe and secure. Comfort objects – or 'transitional' objects as they are referred to by child psychologists – are usually soft, snuggly staples that help kids explore emotional relationships and learn how to develop meaningful connections.
Popular comfort objects include:
· A security blanket
· Stuffed animals, such as a teddy bear
Interestingly, most children with comfort objects believe that theirs has some kind of unique property which makes them special and therefore meant to be appreciated.
As the name suggests, comfort objects remind children of stability, structure and care. With bedtime being when kids are separated from parents and other loved ones for the longest, having a blanket to cuddle or a teddy bear to sleep next to can reduce separation anxiety and create a much calmer sleep environment.
CAN ADULTS BENEFIT FROM SLEEPING WITH SOFT TOYS?
Once we reach adulthood, the world can feel scary and unpredictable. Stress and lack of sleep often go hand-in-hand, taking a toll on both our physical and mental health.
Whether atop a mattress, futon or whatever, sleep should come naturally. So, how do we combat the negative effects of modern life and sleep easier? Soft toys could be the solution.
These comfort objects normally have roots in the early stages of childhood, as outlined above. By replicating the sensations of relief and calm soft toys provided us then, we are able to feel less lonely, less afraid or in danger, and as such can enjoy a truly restful night’s sleep.
An added bonus is that sleeping with soft toys may even help curb snoring. This is because gentle movements made against them during sleep can cause the sleeper to roll over, restarting normal breathing. Now that’s a huge benefit!
IS IT OK FOR ADULTS TO SLEEP WITH SOFT TOYS?
There’s no fixed point in life where you’re supposed to give up sleeping with soft toys. Many adults have a fluffy friend to keep them warm and cosy at night. As long as they’re not affecting things relationship-wise, you can continue being soothed by their cuddly companionship.
And who knows – maybe it’s time to think about adding a few more soft plush animals to your collection!
While it may appear unconventional to some, sleeping with soft toys as an adult is perfectly natural and may even convey certain health benefits. So don’t ever be self-conscious about snuggling up to your bedtime teddy.
